Preliminary Exercise 14: Defining and Analyzing Sound in Film
The sound in film assignment is about determining the essential ideas and terms related to their Foundations Portfolio Blog and the Component 2 Section A essay question for AICE Media Studies. Doing text analyses to increase my confidence in the course subject, and also practice my writing and comprehension skills.
Diegetic sound is any sound that is present in the film's world and exists in that world. It includes any sound that is present in the scene and intended for the characters to hear, like dialogue stated by the actors or sounds from objects or actions happening on screen.
Sounds that are taken in by the characters but not by the audience are known as internal diegetic sound. It symbolizes a character's subjective experience, including their ideas, thoughts, and dreams.
Sounds that are added to the movie but do not exist in the story's world are called Non-diegetic sounds. The noises, which the characters cannot hear, are usually used to improve the narrative or set a particular tone. Any sound added during post-production, including background music, voice-over narration, dramatic sound effects, and other sound effects, is considered a non-diegetic sound.
For the purpose of giving the viewer a genuine, engaging, and emotionally impacting experience, it is important to fully understand the source of sound in movies. It's helpful to the overall storytelling process, improves artistic expression, and helps maintain narrative clarity.
Reflection
I learned the importance of sound in film and differences between curtain terms. The responsibilities I had in this document was doing Sections A and B, the other team member was assigned Section C but did not do anything to help with the assignment. Overall, we did not work together the way I thought we would. I can say we did terrible on this assignment considering that I'm the only one who did anything.
Progress Check
